The first wash is a milestone in your raw denim journey. Here's how to know when it's time and how to do it right.
Why Wait?
Raw denim fades because the indigo dye wears away from friction and creasing. The longer you wear your jeans before washing, the more time the indigo has to wear away in high-friction areas while staying dark in low-friction areas.
Washing "resets" the indigo to some degree — it removes loose dye particles and evens out the color slightly. If you wash too early, before creases are well-established, you'll end up with more uniform, lower-contrast fades.
The Timeline
There's no single "right" time for your first wash. It depends on your lifestyle, climate, and fade goals. Here's a general guide:
1
0-3 Months
The Early Days
Your jeans are stiff and the indigo is at its darkest. Creases are just starting to form.
Recommendation: Don't wash. Let the fabric mold to your body and establish crease patterns.
2
3-6 Months
Creases Setting In
Whiskers and honeycombs are becoming visible. The denim is softening.
Recommendation: Still avoid washing if possible. Spot clean any stains.
3
6-12 Months
The Sweet Spot
Fades are well-established. The jeans have character but may need freshening.
Recommendation: This is the ideal window for your first wash. Fades are set enough to create contrast.
Recommendation: Wash when needed. The longer wait creates more dramatic contrast.
Signs It's Time
Beyond the timeline, pay attention to what your jeans are telling you:
It's Time to Wash When...
There's a noticeable odor that airing out doesn't fix
Visible dirt or stains that spot cleaning can't remove
The fabric feels overly stiff from salt and oils
You've hit your target wear time (6+ months recommended)
You Can Wait Longer If...
The jeans still smell fine after airing out
No visible stains or dirt buildup
You want higher contrast fades
The fabric still feels comfortable
How to Do Your First Wash
When you're ready, follow these steps for the best results:
First Wash Instructions
Turn inside out — This protects the indigo on the outer surface
Fill a tub with cold water — Never use hot water; it causes excessive indigo loss and shrinkage
Add a small amount of detergent — Use a gentle, dye-free detergent like Woolite Dark or a denim-specific wash
Submerge and agitate gently — Let soak for 30-45 minutes, agitating occasionally
Rinse thoroughly — Remove all soap residue with cold water
Hang dry — Never use a dryer. Hang by the waistband away from direct sunlight
Expect Some Changes
Your jeans will shrink 1-3% in length after the first wash (less if sanforized). The waist will also tighten but will stretch back out with wear. Colors will appear slightly lighter and more even — this is normal.
After the First Wash
Once you've completed your first wash, subsequent washes are less critical. The major fade patterns are set. You can wash every 30-50 wears or whenever needed, following the same cold water, gentle method.
Some enthusiasts continue to minimize washing to develop even more contrast over time. Others wash more regularly for hygiene. There's no wrong answer — it's your denim journey.
