How Denim Weight is Measured

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). This measurement tells you how much a square yard of the fabric weighs before any washing or treatment. A higher number means heavier, thicker fabric.

It's important to note that weight doesn't directly correlate with quality — a well-made 12oz denim can outlast a poorly constructed 18oz fabric. Weight is about feel, climate suitability, and fading characteristics.

Climate Considerations

Your local climate should heavily influence your weight choice:

• Hot/Humid (Florida, Texas, Southeast Asia): Stick to 10-13oz. Anything heavier will be uncomfortable most of the year.
• Moderate (California, Pacific Northwest, UK): 13-16oz works year-round with layering options.
• Cold (Northeast US, Canada, Northern Europe): 16-21oz provides warmth and works well 8+ months of the year.
• Four Seasons: Consider owning multiple weights for different seasons.

Weight and Fading

Heavier denim generally produces more dramatic, high-contrast fades — but it takes longer. Here's why:

• Lighter denim is more pliable, creating softer creases and faster indigo loss
• Heavier denim holds sharper creases, creating defined whiskers and honeycombs
• The trade-off is time — expect 2-3x longer to achieve similar fade levels in heavyweight denim

For your first pair of selvedge denim, we recommend 14-15oz. This weight offers:

• Comfortable break-in period (2-3 weeks)
• Good structure without being stiff
• Versatility across most climates
• Balanced fade timeline
