By Published

How much do selvedge jeans cost? We track prices at 36 US stores, 16 online retailers, and 21 brand sites, and on October 8, 2026 the median in-stock pair cost $298. That figure comes from 1,346 distinct jean models we could price that day. Half of them were priced between $248 and $367.25. The cheapest pair was $45, the most expensive $2,030, but the extremes are rare: 72.1% of models sit between $200 and $399.

Across 1,346 selvedge jeans in stock on October 8, 2026, the median price was $298.

Price by denim weight

Heavier denim costs more, and the step is consistent.

WeightModelsMedian priceCheapest in-stock pair
Under 12 oz94$245$84, Unbranded Denim Tight 11 oz
12 to 14.9 oz645$285$45, Everlane Selvedge Slim-Fit
15 to 17.9 oz355$315$128, Brave Star Strongman 15 oz Dojo
18 to 20.9 oz68$342.50$148, Brave Star Loose Straight 18 oz
21 oz and up81$395$178, Brave Star True Straight 21.5 oz Reaper

The jump from a 12 to 14.9 oz pair to a 21 oz and up pair is $110 at the median. A further 103 models had no stated weight and are left out; their median was $225. Our denim weights guide explains the ounce numbers, and the heavyweight page shows what is in stock.

Brand site or store: does it matter where you buy?

233 in-stock models were listed both on the brand's own site and at one or more stores on October 8. Comparing the same jean on both sides:

Same model, brand site vs. storesModelsShareMedian gap
Same price everywhere19985.4%$0
A store was cheaper2912.4%$40, or 13%
The brand site was cheaper52.1%$95

For jeans sold both ways, the price is usually the same everywhere. Brave Star's 59 cross-listed models matched to the dollar, and excluding Brave Star the same-price share is still 80.5% of 174 models. The exceptions cluster in Japanese brands sold through US importers. Full Count's 1103 straight was $365 on the brand site and $255 at the cheapest store, the largest gap we found.

Markdowns are uncommon. 116 of the 1,346 models, 8.6%, showed a compare-at price above the selling price, with a median markdown of 29.8%. Full-price models had a median of $310. A compare-at price is the seller's claim about the old price, which we do not verify. Our price report counts only drops seen in two consecutive daily snapshots, so its rate is lower. Every active markdown is on the deals page.

What the big brands charge

The seven brands with the most models in stock on October 8:

BrandModelsMedianRange
Iron Heart164$385$147.50 to $500
Naked & Famous107$188$99 to $328
Full Count88$375$240 to $970
Hiroshi Kato84$258$198 to $368
Samurai80$378.50$295 to $565
Freenote Cloth71$305$250 to $325
Brave Star Selvage60$148$118 to $228

Iron Heart alone accounts for 164 models, roughly one in eight pairs in the sample. In our limited mill data, 95 models, the mill name did not come with a premium: Kuroki fabric models had a median of $270 across 26 pairs and Kaihara $275 across 20, both below the overall median. That is a hint, not a finding.

Surprises and outliers

The cheapest selvedge jeans we tracked were Everlane's Selvedge Slim-Fit at $45, marked down 74.7% from $178 and in stock at three sellers. A clearance price, but a real one.

At the top, 45R's Appare Sashiko listed at $2,030. Three Visvim Social Sculpture pairs ran $1,050 to $1,776, and a Full Count Works of Art pair was $970. Those five are the only models above $950.

Weight does not buy the top prices. The heaviest pairs in stock, 25 oz Samurai and Iron Heart jeans, cost $440 to $565; the $2,030 45R pair is 14 oz.

What this means if you are buying

Under $200 covers 15.5% of the market: Naked & Famous, Brave Star, Levi's at a $150 median, and Unbranded. See the under $150 and under $250 pages.

$250 to $400 is where most Japanese brands live: Kato, 3sixteen at $270, Momotaro at $315, Full Count, Samurai, Pure Blue Japan at $374, Iron Heart.

Above $415 is the top 10% of the market, where the extra money buys a special fabric or a designer label.

For heavy denim without the heavy price, Brave Star sells 21.5 oz pairs at $178 against a $395 median for that weight class.

How we measured this

Selvedge denim is denim woven on a shuttle loom with self-finished edges, per Denimhunters. Because the looms are slow and the fabric narrow, a pair needs approximately three yards of fabric, which FITTED Underground puts at $10 to $15 a yard at the mill and closer to $20 landed.

Our index holds 3,150 listings; 653 are no longer listed by their seller, leaving 2,497 live across 36 US stores, 16 online retailers tracked through their own feeds, and 21 brand sites. We dropped 100 whose feed had not synced in the 14 days before October 8, then 248 jackets, shirts, shorts, overalls, and non-denim pants, and 122 non-selvedge jeans. The remaining 2,027 listings collapse to 1,406 models. A model is one jean in one fabric: the same Iron Heart 634S-142 at five stores counts once, the indigo and black versions count separately, and sizes never count. 60 models had no size in stock anywhere, leaving 1,346 priced models from 96 brands.

Each model is priced at its lowest in-stock size across all sellers, in US dollars. All 1,346 prices matched our separate daily price snapshot.

Limitations: 103 models have no stated weight, the mill is known for only 95, and men's and women's cuts are pooled because most listings do not say. Sync dates span September 24 to October 8.

FAQ

Why are selvedge jeans so expensive?

Selvedge is woven on slow shuttle looms that produce narrow fabric, so each pair uses more yardage and loom time than mass-market denim. FITTED Underground estimates about $60 of fabric per pair for a small US brand using Japanese selvedge. In our data the finished jean has a $298 median, with 72.1% of pairs between $200 and $399.

Are selvedge jeans worth it?

We cannot measure lifespan, so we will not claim one. What we can say is that the market is tight: half of all pairs fall within $248 to $367.25, and the same jean costs the same at the brand site and at stores 85.4% of the time. At the $298 median you are paying the going rate, not a markup you could have shopped around.

What is a good price for a first pair of selvedge jeans?

Anything under $200 is in the bottom 15.5% of the market, and plenty of real Japanese selvedge lives there: Naked & Famous has a $188 median, Brave Star $148. If you want to try the category before spending $300, that band is the place. Our beginner's guide covers fit and sizing.

Are Japanese selvedge jeans more expensive?

Fabric origin alone cannot answer it. Of 1,346 models, 411 state Japanese fabric at a $285 median, only 17 state US fabric, also $285, 8 list another origin, and 910 do not say. What costs more in our data is a Japanese brand that sews in Japan: Iron Heart at $385, Samurai at $378.50, Full Count at $375, against Brave Star at $148 and Naked & Famous at $188.

Do heavier jeans cost more?

Yes, steadily. The median rises from $245 under 12 oz to $285 at 12 to 14.9 oz, $315 at 15 to 17.9 oz, $342.50 at 18 to 20.9 oz, and $395 at 21 oz and up. The cheapest 21 oz pair in stock was $178.

Is it cheaper to buy from the brand's own site?

Usually it makes no difference. Of 233 models sold both ways, 199 cost the same on the brand site and at stores. A store was cheaper for 29, by a median of $40, and the brand site was cheaper for 5. Compare sellers for Japanese brands sold through importers, where the gaps live, and buy wherever the shipping and returns suit you.
